Efudix Calcipotriol Compound
a dynamic duo
This novel compound has revolutionised topical efudix treatment for sunspots.1 This combination was first used in 2016 by American dermatologists. It reduces the duration of treatment to 4 days instead of few weeks. Reaction is much milder and quite well tolerated as opposed to traditional efudix cream.
Efudix (5FU) cream has been used for more than 50 years for treating sunspots and superficial skin cancers. It selectively destroys sun-damaged cells in the skin, whilst retaining the normal healthy skin cells.
Efudix cream induces inflammation in the skin. After 5 to 10 days of treatment, the sun-damaged parts of treated skin become red and scaly. As treatment is continued, sores and crusts may appear. These raw areas result from the destruction of defective skin cells. Duration of treatment is usually 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the skin type and burden of sunspots. Combination of 5-FU and Calcipotriol, a vitamin D derivative, has shown promising results within only 4 days of treatment.
Calcipotriol is available in Australia for treating psoriasis, a skin disease with overactive skin cells. This combination treatment was discovered by Harvard dermatologists in 2016; it has been proven to be safe and effective for treating pre-cancer sunspots.
Studies indicate that efudix calcipotriol compound is as effective as plain efudix cream in getting rid of the pre cancer sunspots.2
