Skin cancers can grow anywhere on our skin and in any types of skin regardless of the skin colour. You should be aware of signs and symptoms of melanomas which. You can check your moles at home and look for the following signs, ABCD of melanomas:
Asymmetry: Most skin cancer is asymmetrical.
Border: Skin cancers often have irregular borders, the edges might be notches and scalloped.
Colour: Melanomas usually present with more than one colour. They may have different shades of tan, brown, pink, grey or black.
Diameter: Any lesions over 6 mm in diameter is important especially if the lesion is growing in diameter. Rememeber early melanoma are always flat so do not just look at raised moles.
Evolving: Any changes in shape, size, colour is important . Any new symptom, such as bleeding, itching or crusting, could be a warning sign.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) the most common form of cancer in human but luckily it is one of the least aggressive forms of skin cancer. BCCs are usually slow growing and present as pink spots on face especially nose and ear, chest and upper torso. Once BCCs get bigger that can become ulcerated, bleeding or appear like a scar.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common skin cancer and usually occurs in sun exposed part of the body including scalp, ears, nose , cheeks, hands and forearms. SCCs are aggressive and could spread to other parts of the body. SCC present like a rough raised scaly and tender skin lesion.
Melanoma is less common than BCCs and SCCs but is very aggressive and could easily travel to other organs ( lungs, brain, bones) if left untreated. Melanoma usually present is torso and limbs as dark brown/ black spot with irregular shape. It could take 6 – 12 months for a melanoma to appear and grow to a dangerous phase, that is why regular skin check is extremely important in detecting melanomas as early as possible
